RIEGL VQX-1 Wing Pod on piston aircraft

One of the challenges for professionals in the aerial surveying & mapping market is the availability of survey aircraft with a suitable hatch for the internal integration of sensors. Also, finding suitable aircraft in remote areas can be challenging for service providers who operate around the globe.

To solve this problem, the RIEGL VQX-1 Wing Pod now delivers a fully integrated modular airborne laser scanning solution for user-friendly installation with light fixed-wing Cessna aircraft. As a result, service providers will no longer lose time and money on aircraft modifications but will focus more on their primary job.

All-In-One Solution

With the VQX-1 Wing Pod, users can easily and quickly equip an aircraft with a portable, compact airborne laser scanning system with integrated high-resolution cameras and IMU/GNSS system, all without permanent modifications or cumbersome installations to the aircraft. Additionally, the versatile wing pod design can carry one RIEGL laser scanner (VUX-12023, VUX-16023, VUX-240, VQ-480 II, VQ-580 II(-S) or VQ-840-G(L)), as well as up to three high-resolution cameras (e.g., Phase One iXM 100) and an high-end IMU/GNSS unit (e.g., Applanix AP60).

The empty weight of the pod is only 8 kg with a total of up to 30 kg. The system comes with a non-intrusive strut mount, GNSS Antenna, plus the appropriate cabling for both power and the GNSS Antenna. To make things even better for the global aerial surveying community, the VQX-1 is EASA certified for the Cessna 172, 182, and 206 series, i.e., the most owned, operated, and available aircraft in the world. The validation of the EASA STC by the FAA is in progress.

The Right Tool for the Right Job

Undoubtedly, the VQX-1 Wing Pod will open the door to new and experienced aerial surveyors looking for a good return on their investment. The applications for this pod are endless in remote sensing, especially in the LiDAR sector. If you’re in the business of collecting data for:

• Corridor Mapping
• City Modeling
• Wide Area Mapping
• Emergency Management Planning
• and Many More Applications…

the RIEGL VQX-1 Wing Pod will not sell you short. The uncompromising lightweight, innovative design, and quick installation & removal make it one of the most robust and reliable sensor wing pods on the market.
