STEMME S10-VT - Very Unique!

If one aircraft should be called unique- it is the Stemme S10-VT. This twin-seater combines two complete aircraft in one airframe - a fully powered aircraft and a high-end soaring glider. Seating side-by-side the crew enjoys both- a perfect field of vision from the cockpit and easy work-share during long distance flights. Accommodation under the large one-piece canopy is very comfortable. The seats and dual controls could be easily adapted to the individual size of the pilots. Noise level under full power is comparatively low and non existant in glider-mode.

Unique Stemme design features
The characteristic feature of all Stemme aircraft is the engine position in the center of the fuselage underneath the wings. Concentrating the largest mass in the center of gravity makes the aircraft more stable- reduces the cockpit noise significantly and enables an aerodynamic clean nose-design. Power from the four-stroke turbo-charged Rotax engine is delivered via a carbon long-shaft to the nose mounted propeller. This special pitch-able prop is the second unique Stemme feature. During soaring flight it lays folded hidden inside the movable nose-cone. Pushing a handle moves the nose-cone forward- thus releasing the two propeller-blades. Starting the engine by turning the key- the centrifugal force unfolds the prop. The whole process does not take more than five seconds from decision to full power. No moving mass- no shifting in aerodynamics - no trim change needed. The transition back from powered flight to soaring mode is again easy.

Remarkable flight specifications
Being designed also as a soaring aircraft- the Stemme S10-VT offers in powered flight an extreme clean aerodynamic layout. The very slim fuselage lines enable a high cruising speed of up to 140 kts (248 km/h) and a range of up to 929 nm (1720 km) under power. With its wings spanning over 75 feet (23 m) the S10-VT has a service ceiling of 30-000 feet (9140 m) clearly exceeded during some research flights. Flown as a glider these wings enable a fantastic lift to drag ratio of 1:50. This gives power-flight minded pilots or flight-schools a comfortable large safety margin for reaching a safe landing site even with a cut off engine. More glider minded pilots love to take off with their Stemme S10-VT under power without help from others and proceed to the wanted soaring area even for a large distance. Enjoying the excellent glider characteristics of their aircraft and returning to the home-base when ever wanted.

The Stemme S10-VT is known as an agile aircraft- with flaperons over the full span and airbrakes in the wings it can use a broad range of flight regimes.

The airframe is a carbon-fiber construction with a steel framework as its center fuselage module. This framework carries the engine and all loads from the cockpit- and tailboommodule- from the main gear and from the wings. The main gear is operated electrically and extends under its own weight- the tail-wheel is steerable- the whole aircraft is very easy to maneuver on the ground.

All over the world
With his S10 aircraft- the designer Dr. Stemme also created a collectors piece for design enthusiasts. It flies as good as it looks. It is often called 'the flying beauty'. So a remarkably exclusive group of pilots all over the world own a S10. From Finland's snow to the deserts of Saudi-Arabia- from Singapore to South-America and of course to the United States- Stemme pilots are proud of their unique aircraft. Many of them are professional pilots and appreciate the special characteristics of this sports aircraft for relaxing and touring.

Today everybody is talking about 'green flying'- the S10-VT has been an early advocate of 'green flying' from the beginning. With the engine encapsulated inside the fuselage- it emits less noise than a comparable powered aircraft. Through excellent aerodynamics it consumes less fuel and using the S10-VT as a glider for some legs of a flight this reduces the fuel consumption even more. Being very robust the carbon airframe has an extreme long life expectancy- the owners admire these facts.

Also a research aircraft
For the quality characteristics noted above the S10-VT is not only flown by private pilots but is also a workhorse for some research institutes and scientists. The aircraft is used for aerodynamic researches and environmental surveillance for example.

The scientists/pilots of the 'Mountain Wave Project' have flown a glider world record with their S10 over the Andes in South America. During his 14 hour flight Klaus Ohlmann has covered a distance of 1-331 nm (2463 km) in pure glider modus without using his engine.

But the team is aiming for more. Their S10 research aircraft is currently being prepared for an expedition that will fly high over the Himalaya mountains to explore the waves behind the highest mountains of our planet.
