EUROCOPTER begins UTair’s Deliveries
- 20 Ecureuil helicopters- largest contract of its type for Russia and the CIS

Eurocopter has delivered the first of 20 Ecureuil family helicopters contracted last autumn by Russia’s UTair Aviation in the largest acquisition of its kind for the Russian and CIS market in the lightweight helicopter segment.

The initial helicopter provided in this order – which was signed with the Eurocopter Vostok subsidiary – is a single-engine AS350 B3. It is to be followed by deliveries of the enhanced AS350 B3e version- for which UTair is the launch customer in Russia- along with the twin-engine Ecureuil AS355 NP variant.

UTair Confirms AW139 Order

Russian Helicopters and AgustaWestland in mid-August- signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a planned order of 20 AW139 helicopters to be assembled in Russia.

AgustaWestland and Russian Helicopters have also recently announced the establishment of HeliVert- a joint venture company which will assemble and deliver to UTair a batch of AW139 helicopters from its Tomilino plant in the Moscow region.

HeliVert's Tomilino plant- near Moscow- will have the capacity to assemble up to 20 helicopters per year- with production to start later this year and progressively increase to a steady state regime by 2015. The total headcount at maximum capacity will be over 100 people. The plant will meet the growing demand for the AW139 helicopter in both Russian and CIS civil markets.

MAKS SHOW – Russian Helicopter Developments

Russian Helicopters used the MAKS Air Show outside Moscow to showcase a number of developments across its range- displaying several new variants for the first time. Some long-stalled projects appear to be finally beginning to gain some momentum. Among the new aircraft displayed were the light Mi-34C1- a Ka-226T with a medical module- the Mi-38 transport helicopter and the new heavy Mi-26T2

During Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s visit to the show on 17 August- Gazprom Avia signed for 39 Mi-8AMT helicopters to service its gas pipeline network. The aircraft will be delivered between 2012 and 2016. On the export front- a spokesman said that the primary focus was on fellow BRIC members Brazil- India and China. Meanwhile- to help guarantee timely future deliveries of its Mil and Kamov helicopter families- Russian Helicopters in June signed an agreement with United Engine Corporation (UEC) for engine deliveries through to 2020.

There also appears to be progress on the development of the new Kamov Ka-62 with Russian Helicopters ordering a batch of 40 Turbomeca Ardiden 3G engines for the medium helicopter. According to company documents- certification of the aircraft- which will seat 12 to 15- is scheduled for 2014.

The agreement with AgustaWestland for an assembly line in Russia of the AW139 also moved forward recently with the signing of the final agreements of the HeliVert joint venture in June. The assembly line on a 40-000sq m site in Tomilino near Moscow is currently being built and is expected to produce some 15 aircraft per year for the Russian and CIS markets.

The stalled Mi-38 programme- which has been in development since the 1980s- appears to be gaining momentum- Petrov telling reporters he expected to sign the first launch customer for the type in 2011. The two Mi-38 flying prototypes were on display at the show – one powered by Pratt and Whitney PW1267/5 engines and the other with recently installed Klimov TV7-117 powerplants. At its exhibition space Russian Helicopters displayed a representative interior of a Mi-38 in VIP configuration.

Mi-34 Production Re-launched
Russian Helicopters plans to start serial production of its new Mi-34C1 in 2012- according to company representatives at the MAKS air show outside Moscow. The holding company for Russian helicopter manufacturers made the modernised Mi-34C1 the focal point of its participation at the show- unveiling a prototype in military colours outside its exhibition as well as a civil version in the static display.
