To date, the best-selling Very Light Jet model to be produced is the Cessna Citation Mustang. Between 2006 and 2017, Cessna sold 479 Citation Mustangs, according to JETNET data.
A brand new Very Light Jet costs between $5.2m – for a Honda HA-420 HondaJet – and $2.8m, for a single-engine Cirrus SF50 VisionJet (per Aircraft Bluebook’s winter 2020 data). Buyers shopping the pre-owned market will find a wide range of pricing, with a 2006 model Eclipse 500 costing an average $500k.
Though they’re smaller than other jets, Very Light Jets have highly advanced avionics that help enhance pilot safety. Further safety features not found on larger jets are installed on the Cirrus VisionJet (for example), including an airframe parachute system and pilot auto-land button that automatically detects and lands the jet at the nearest airport, in an emergency.
Very Light Jets tend to have lower maximum operating speeds than larger jets. These range between 300kts up to around 420kts. But the speed differences are nominal on the shorter legs Very Light Jets are ideally designed to fly.

The cabins of the smaller models, such as the single-engine Cirrus Vision Jet, and twin-engine models from Eclipse and Cessna have been likened to the interiors of today’s leading sports utility vehicles. Other models in production today are manufactured by Embraer and Honda.
The Very Light Jet category is a relatively new segment within Business Aviation, having only been realized when the Eclipse 500 jet entered the market near the beginning of the new millennium. Very Light Jets were ultimately made possible by new, lighter, more fuel-efficient engine technology developed at that time.
While there have been several concepts introduced over the years, the pool of Very Light Jets that have successfully achieved certification remains fairly small in comparison to other jet categories. Models from Cessna, Cirrus Aircraft, Eclipse, Embraer and Honda comprise the new and pre-owned market today.
The Very Light Jet category has been referred to by different names over the years, each alluding to an aspect of their appeal to the market. For example, ‘Personal Jet’ refers to the fact jets in this category are ideal for owner-pilots, and are designed to suit single pilot operations very well. Meanwhile, ‘Entry Level Jet’ highlights how these models provide an entry point for piston and turboprop owners looking to own their first private jet.
By our definition, the Very Light Jet category refers to private jets with a maximum take-off weight of 10,000lbs and less. These can be single- or twin-engine jets that tend to offer smaller cabin volumes seating between four and five passengers. Their interiors are often likened to the interiors of today’s most luxurious Sport Utility Vehicles.
The typical trip flown by a Very Light Jet is usually relatively short, and, with four passengers aboard, non-stop trip capabilities tend to range from just under 1,000 nautical miles (in the case of the Eclipse 500) up to 1,250 nautical miles (Embraer Phenom 100).
Very Light Jets are popular with owner-pilots, who might be entrepreneurs needing to maximize the efficiency of their travel time within a 750 nautical mile radius of their home base, or those wishing to transport their friends, family or pets on shorter trips quickly and efficiently.
