Tracing its roots back to the mid-1940s, Aero Commander designed and manufactured various light twin-engine transport aircraft and single-engine piston models. The company came to be known as Aero Commander following its purchase by Rockwell-Standard in 1958. After several years of successful aircraft manufacture, including development of the 1121 Jet Commander business twinjet the manufacturing rights for which were sold to IAI, Rockwell sold the Aero Commander division to Gulfstream Aerospace in 1981.
